Report Finds University of Minnesota Committed Genocide of Indigenous Peoples

A report published by the TRUTH project—Towards Recognition and University-Tribal Healing—has concluded that the University of Minnesota is responsible for committing “genocide and ethnic cleansing of Indigenous peoples.”

The TRUTH Project, which is a collaboration between the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council and the University of Minnesota, hopes the partnership creates a “community-led participatory research designed to give Tribes the opportunity to tell, in their words, the history of relations between their Tribal Nation and the University of Minnesota.”

The project’s 500+ page report found that the university profited from land forcibly taken from Tribal nations. Research pointed to several examples of institutional harm that the university has participated in since its inception.

The report also created a series of recommendations for university leadership to implement going forward.
